The Grammy-winning singer has been cast as Saraghina in “Nine,” a big-screen adaptation of the Tony-winning musical. She will perform the saucy song “Be Italian” with Guido, played by Daniel Day-Lewis.

“She’s basically a prostitute on the beach,” Fergie told The Associated Press in an interview. “She introduces him to the world of sexuality. It’s a very strong song. I’m just thrilled I get to play a character. I’m singing, but I’m not singing as myself. I’m going to be singing as a character, and that’s what’s really exciting to me.”

Fergie, 33, joins Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench and Kate Hudson in “Nine,” directed by Rob Marshall (”Chicago”). Filming is set to begin in October. Fergie, whose real name is Stacy Ann Ferguson, had minor roles in the “Poseidon” and “Grindhouse” movies.

“I’m speechless,” she said of the opportunity to work with the film’s A-list talent. “I’m definitely going to be a sponge on set. I want to pick up on everything that all these brilliant actors are bringing to the table. I’m probably going to be the quietest that I’ve ever been while working just because I want to watch and learn.”

She was in Las Vegas on Monday to debut her two new shoe lines at the World Shoe Association show in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Fergie, who released her hit-packed solo album “The Duchess” in 2006, said she’s now in the studio working on a new album with the Black Eyed Peas, their first new record since 2005’s “Monkey Business.”

“It’s a new sound,” she said. “We’re going into the future. We’re not doing the same old thing. We’re not trying to copy what’s out there on the radio. We’re being artistic and pushing the envelope.”

While there are several female leads in the film, including Academy Award winners Kate Hudson (announced Wednesday), Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard, as well as Academy Award nominee Penelope Cruz, Fergie’s role will be significant.

The musical revolves around the women in the life of the male lead character, Guido Contini, who will be played by two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis. The show is loosely based on the life of Italian director Federico Fellini, and inspired by his masterpiece, “8½.” “Nine” opened on Broadway in 1982 and was revived starring (amongst others) Antonio Banderas (and later, John Stamos), Mary Stuart Masterson, Jane Krakowski, Chita Rivera and Laura Benanti.

Fergie has had smaller roles on the big screen in recent years, including 2007’s “Grindhouse” and 2006’s “Poseidon.” She began her acting career on the small screen on the show “Kids Incorporated.”

The event, which was held at Japan’s Saitama Super Arena, also honoured several of Japan’s hottest acts.

Best Group Video went to Japanese rockers Yoshika & Lisa for Love Comes And Goes, while singer Hata Motohiro won Best New Artist of the Year for Uroko.

Canadian pop-punk star Avril Lavigne also took home an award - scooping Best Pop Video for Girlfriend. Best Dance Video went to DJ duo The Chemical Brothers, who were honoured for their Do It Again track.

The ceremony attracted several superstars with Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey and rapper Flo Rida all gracing the event’s red carpet.

Brown Shoe product developers are collaborating with Fergie for the line, which will debut in spring 2009.

The partnership was facilitated by Fergie’s marketing agents at Wilhelmina Artist Management.

Fergie, whose real name is Stacy Ann Ferguson, is a member of the Black Eyed Peas.

Brown Shoe shares fell 34 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $16 during midday trading. The stock has traded between $11.89 and $33 during the past 52 weeks.

Hip-hop singer Fergie, shown at Street Scene at Qualcomm Stadium in 2005, will make an appearance at the San Diego County Fair next month.
“We’re investing a lot of money in her,” acknowledged Barry Nussbaum, board member for the 22nd District Agricultural Association, a state agency that oversees the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

As the economy continues its decline, officials say they are marketing the fair – which runs from June 14 to July 6 – as a bargain for families looking for a day of entertainment across the 344-acre venue.

Most shows in the 9,000-seat grandstand are free with fair admission, which ranges from $6 to $12, although some shows offer reserve seating at a separate price.

Tickets for “An Evening with Fergie” on June 27 range from $35 for general admission to $131 for reserved seats.

Before Fergie’s record-setting fee, the most expensive fair acts have been $150,000 for Earth, Wind & Fire, which is booked for this summer and also performed last year. The same was paid to ZZ Top, which performed in 2005.

Third place is held by Barry Manilow, paid $130,000 in 2002.

“Our staff is incredibly scientific about this,” Nussbaum said. “In the past, we’ve done fine on expensive acts.”

Extensive research is done on every performer or group selected for the fair’s Summer Concert Series, he said.

“I think Fergie will be a tremendous draw,” Nussbaum said. “She’s the biggest female act in America today.”

Last year, attendance at the fair was a record 1,265,997.

Despite Fergie’s performance fee, this year’s $1.2 million budget for the Summer Concert Series is the same as last year’s, fair officials said.

Fergie, whose real name is Stacy Ann Ferguson, performs as a solo act and with the hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas.

She has won numerous awards, including best pop/rock female artist at the 2007 American Music Awards.
